Another part of my plan is to make half of my items to give away. I've now nearly finished three hats for Dulaan.
I think I like the color, fabric, shape, of the first (purple) one best. Next I tried a sort of creamsicle orange, just to see the difference between a light and a dark. The third one is a curiously bright lavender.
Pattern Notes:
PURPLE
Because of my unwillingness to read a pattern, along with the fact that I was running short on yarn, I changed the decreases. I started at a little more than 6" and decreased at 6 points instead of 12. When I had 10 st left on each needle (30 total) and very little yarn, I k2tog all around followed by *k2tog k k2tog* 3x. This left me with about 1" of yarn which I pulled through the remaining 9 stitches and "wove" in with a crochet hook.

I ended up not using yarn salvaged from cast on tail.
This one ended up a little big (over 20" unstretched, fits me over the ears). I thought the fabric might be a little loose, but I think I like it that way. I might still lightly hand felt it.

plenty big, maybe a little too loose, might felt lightly by hand
ORANGE
I tried to get a smaller hat by using a US 8 instead of US 10.5, and ended with slightly different decreases: decrease to 24 before k2tog all around and end with 6 stitches instead of 9.
LAVENDER
Since I liked the feel of the fabric on 10.5 better, I went back to it and cast on 55 so I would hopefully come up with a less adult-sized hat. I meant to cast on 54 to have a number still divisible by 6, but somehow that intention didn't make it to the playground with me. Otherwise, I think I followed the decreases of the first one.
Other notes:
After three hats my skin needs a break from the mohair.
